Fluorescent lamps is more commonly known as TL lamps. This type of lighting is more widely used because of the power used is relatively small compared to the light bulb. Besides fluorescent lamp also colder than light bulb with the same power usage.
The use of fluorescent lighting is very broad and very good in general for home lighting or lighting on industries. The advantage of the fluorescent lamp, as mentioned above is to produce light output every watt of power used is higher than ordinary light bulb (incandescent lamp).
For example, a study showed that 32 watt fluorescent lamp will produce light of 1700 lumens at 1 meter distance and 75 watt regular bulb lamp (bulb lamp with a tungsten filament) produces 1200 lumens. Or in other words the ratio of efficiency fluorescent lamp and bulb lamp is 53: 16. In this case, Efficiency is defined as the intensity of the light produced divided by the electrical power used.
Although the fluorescent lamp which has a huge advantage in power saving, fluorescent lamp also has disadvantages. TL lamp disadvantages are:
  • The amount of costs purchasing a set of fluorescent lamp.
  • Need a bigger place for a set of fluorescent lamp.
Therefore a standard fluorescent lamp still has drawbacks as mentioned above, with electronic ballasts, the place used by a standard fluorescent lamp can be reduced to equal the space used by a lamp bulb. Moreover with electronic ballasts, we can overcome the flicker due to a lower supply voltage frequency.
Standard fluorescent lamp operation only requires very few components, namely: Ballast (such as inductors), a starter, and a capacitor (generally not used) and a fluorescent lamp tubes. This construction can be seen in Figure 1.
Fluorescent lamp tube is filled with a kind of gas which during the electrode gets a high voltage, the gas will be ionized, causing electrons in the gas moving and casting  fluorescent layer at the fluorescent lamp tube.
The starter is an essential component in this fluorescent lamp system because a starter will produce a trigger pulse so that the ballast can generate high voltage spikes. The starter is a bimetallic components built inside a vacuum tube that is usually filled with neon gas.
